As our team gathers at IMTS 2024 - the International Manufacturing Technology Show - held from September 9-14 in Chicago, we're excited to demonstrate an AI-enabled solution running on the Intrinsic platform, that we’re eager to share with machine OEMs, robotics system integrators and CNC machine users everywhere.

Sharing a booth with our colleagues from Google Cloud, we’ll demonstrate a flexible CNC machine tending solution running on the Intrinsic platform. Manufacturers in any industry will understand the importance of computer numerical control machines, known as “CNCs”, to automate the fabrication of items with precision and reliability at scale. Whether it’s to lathe, mill, grind, laser cut, punch or bend - CNC machines have become essential productivity tools for millions of businesses globally. As adoption of CNC machines continues to rise, the opportunity for robotic solutions to intelligently tend them and assist machinists day to day, rises too.

Our IMTS demo will showcase an easier and more flexible way to build a CNC machine tending

solution for processing aluminum raw stock pieces - an incredibly common task. It was developed and validated seamlessly using a digital twin with Flowstate, Intrinsic’s developer environment for solution builders. At our booth, you can see how quickly a solution goes from sim to real with a couple of clicks, and runs in real-time using our stack.

This solution leverages our built in capabilities for ML-trained perception, intelligent motion planning and force-torque control. These capabilities are ready to use and combinable, which enables the robot to adapt to the location of the aluminum pieces, then grasp and move them into the CNC machine while avoiding collisions. Once in the CNC machine, force-torque control skills are used to precisely place the part in the clamp for processing. To fit in the booth, we’re using a miniaturized mock CNC machine and toolset, to show how the entire process can be orchestrated with Intrinsic.

Solutions like this can enable automation in high mix low volume production, by reducing the setup times for new part introduction and production jobs. This is just one example of how AI-enabled robotics can add new value to long-standing processes on the shop floor, without specialized robotics expertise.
